Should I purchase more than just liability car insurance?

by | Apr 28, 2017 | Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Accidents

Everyone loves a good bargain, but those who buy the cheapest auto insurance coverage for their vehicles may experience buyer’s remorse if they wind up involved in a wreck with an uninsured (or under-insured) driver.

Is it ever possible to get financial compensation after an at-fault, uninsured driver injures you and damages your vehicle?

It might be, depending on the circumstances. If you had the wisdom and foresight to include uninsured motorist coverage to cover the damages to you and your automobile.

Even f that is not the case in this particular situation, it may be possible to sue drivers personally since they didn’t bother to purchase the required minimum coverage.

But the downside of that scenario is that it would be unusual for drivers who couldn’t afford to buy a basic policy to have assets sufficient to cover your claim(s). But you never know — the driver could win the lottery or come into some other type of windfall.

It’s common for drivers involved in accidents with under- or uninsured drivers to turn to their own policies to cover expenses from the wrecks. This type of uninsured motorist coverage will also pay out claims from hit-and-run accidents where the other driver is unknown.

Drivers should familiarize themselves with their auto insurance policies and their limits and exclusions. If you can afford it, adding this coverage now can save you a lot of drama in the future.

Remember, after an accident with injuries occurs, no one involved is ever overheard saying they wish they didn’t have so much coverage to cushion their losses.
