The proper mindset and actions after a car crash

by | Jul 15, 2015 | Car Accidents

If you’re involved in a car crash in Colorado, you need to keep your wits about you and react properly after the accident. This starts with having the proper mindset and worrying about the individuals in the wreck before the state of your car or your insurance claim. Always check on people first, and call 911 if it is needed. Then you can see about your vehicle.

It’s also a good idea to get off of the road. If you can move your car off the road, you may want to do this as well. Don’t leave the scene of the crash — this is illegal — but just move to the shoulder so that other vehicles coming up behind you don’t also get into accidents. Naturally, this may be impossible if your car is destroyed or you are injured, but you should try to do it if you can.

As you begin talking to the other people in the crash, be careful with what you say. It’s fine to ask if they are all right or talk about the wreck, and you do want to exchange insurance information. What you don’t want to do is admit fault or incriminate yourself. Even if you think you were the one who caused the wreck, you don’t want to say anything. Wait until the facts can be gathered. You may find that you weren’t at fault at all, and you don’t want to make an admission that could come back to haunt you.

Have you been injured in a wreck? If so, it’s also good to look into your legal right to compensation.
