Colorado drivers and cyclists are likely aware that they need to learn how to share the road to avoid any tragic accidents. Car accidents involving bicycles can often have tragic consequences. A 46-year-old cyclist was fatally injured recently as he was riding near Windsor. Unfortunately, the driver who struck him fled the scene. If the driver is ever located, the loved ones of the decedent may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim against him or her.
Troopers from the Colorado State Patrol responded to the accident scene near Windsor at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 25. The collision reportedly occurred on a frontage road just off of Interstate 25. The victim sustained serious injuries in the crash, but he was still alive at the scene. He was taken to a hospital in Loveland, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators currently have few leads, but they believe the driver was in a silver sedan that may now have a broken windshield and front-end damage. The victim was thought to have been struck from behind. The vehicle believed to have struck him was last seen traveling north on the frontage road.
Fatal hit and run car accidents can often leave family members with many unanswered questions. If the driver of the vehicle suspected to have caused the crash is ever found, he or she may face criminal charges in addition to a civil suit. The family may decide to seek restitution for wrongful death, particularly if evidence shows that the driver was acting negligently before the collision. A successful suit may help the family gain some closure and provide them with some financial assistance as they try to move on with their lives.
