Former NFL star Chad Johnson refuses to sign divorce papers

by | Sep 21, 2012 | High Asset Divorce

Marriage is a happy institution for many Colorado couples, but we all know that not every marriage was meant to be. For some people divorce is the best option for their pursuit of happiness. In particular, a high-asset divorce can be difficult because not just emotions are involved. Complex business assets, taxes and the vagaries of property categories can induce a headache if one doesn’t have the proper legal assistance.

Though we certainly get enough information from the media about celebrities and sports stars, looking at their divorce proceedings can offer helpful talking points for those of us who don’t live in the limelight.

For instance, on Sept. 10, sources stated that Chad Johnson, a former NFL star, has refused to sign the paperwork for his high-asset divorce from his estranged wife, Evelyn Lozada. Johnson won’t sign off on the divorce because he is apparently still trying to win back his wife. She, however, says their marriage is “irretrievably broken.” Besides, in Florida where the divorce papers were filed, Lozada doesn’t need her husband’s approval to dissolve the marriage; she only needs a judge’s permission.

The marriage ceremony for Johnson and Lozada was recorded in July for a reality television show that has since been abandoned in production, meaning the nuptial bond will likely not last as long as Kim Kardashian’s 72-day marriage. Still, Johnson and Lozada may have some asset division troubles once the breakup is legally finalized.

They will both need strong legal representation, especially since their split appears to have been precipitated by a domestic violence incident that sent him to jail and her to the hospital.
