Colorado ranks in the top 10 states for uninsured motorists

by | Apr 16, 2015 | Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Accidents

Car insurance is required for all drivers in Colorado, but there will always be those who think they can skirt the law and drive without insurance. They hope that they won’t get caught. If a driver is pulled over and can’t present proof of insurance, there may be fines or a license suspension, but if an uninsured or underinsured driver causes a car accident, the consequences are much more far-reaching.

According to a study conducted by the Insurance Research Council, approximately one in eight drivers nationwide do not have the legally required insurance coverage. While the number of uninsured motorist nationally has been dropping overall in the past decade, Colorado was ranked number nine in the country for the highest percentage of uninsured drivers (16.2 percent) in 2012.

It’s important to keep in mind that these statistics were gathered by comparing the frequency of uninsured motorist claims to bodily injury claims. There may in fact be a much higher percentage of uninsured drivers who just aren’t getting involved in accidents.

Usually, if a driver with the appropriate amount of insurance causes an accident in which others are injured, the at-fault driver’s insurance provider will pay out monies for damages. However, when the driver doesn’t have any insurance or not enough insurance, it can mean that the other party is stuck fighting an uphill battle trying to get the at-fault driver to pay. This can be a time-consuming and stressful process, but a personal injury attorney can help ease that burden and let you focus on recovering and regaining your health.
