Relationships Built On Trust

The link between car accidents and your favorite music

by | Jan 26, 2015 | Car Accidents

Many people love to listen to music while driving around Fort Collins, Colorado, but did you know that you may actually be more likely to get in a car accident if you have your favorite song playing?

Reports have come out of a study done in Israel, though it is applicable all over the world. Researchers got together a number of drivers who were all said to be 18 years old. The researchers rode along with them on 40-minute drives, similar to those done during driver’s training. The researchers then noted what mistakes were made, both while the person’s favorite music was playing and while it turned off.

When the results were compared to one another, they found that the vast majority of the drivers — 92 percent — were guilty of mistakes even while the car was silent. However, that number rose all the way up to an incredible 98 percent if the drivers were listening to their favorite songs.

Some of the infractions that were recorded including tailgating other drivers and breaking the speed limit.

Interestingly, the group also used light music, like jazz, that they deemed to be “safe-driving” music. When people were listening to it while behind the wheel, the amount of mistakes fell to just 77 percent, below even the amount made in a silent car. Clearly, the type of music that is played in a vehicle can have a big impact on the driver’s abilities.

If you have been injured in a car accident, whether music was involved or not, you need to make sure that you know your legal options.
