Vehicles recalled by Kia, Toyota and Porsche

A geographic recall has been issued by Kia of nearly 80,000 Sedona minivans for repair of control arms. The front control arms can rust and break, possibly causing steering failure. Complaints have been filed by consumers who have experienced problems, but Kia says that it is not aware of any car accidents or injuries related to defective control arms. One owner said that if the steering failure that was experienced had occurred while the children were in the car and on the highway, the consequences could have been much worse than what they were.

Vehicle manufacturers routinely limit recalls to a geographic area, targeting areas where problems are the most likely to occur. This practice has been criticized by consumer groups such as the Center for Auto Safety, which advocates a nationwide recall and argues that there may be vehicles missed because of this limitation. However, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration and automakers defend this practice, citing practicality and effectiveness.

Toyota and Porsche are also recalling vehicles. Toyota has disclosed the need to check the electrical systems in the 2013-14 Camry and Camry Hybrid, the 2013-14 Avalon and Avalon Hybrid and the 2014 Corolla; the recall affects about 9,800 vehicles. Porsche is recalling 207 model year 2014 Cayennes to inspect fuel sensors. The automaker is also recalling 81 vehicles for a defective wiring harness in the passenger seat; this recall affects 2014 Boxster, Cayman and 911 models. The automaker reported that a defect in the wiring harness can prevent the airbag from deploying in an accident.

Defects in vehicles can cause catastrophic accidents that could result in death or lifelong disabilities. A personal injury attorney might examine the possible causes of auto accidents and determine liability and any potential entitlement to compensation.
