Will high-profile couple Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson split?

"Twilight" fans in Fort Collins have likely heard the news that Kristen Stewart was recently caught in a compromising situation with director Rupert Sanders. Now the star of the "Twilight" trilogy has issued a public apology for her indiscretion, stating that she was sorry for the pain and embarrassment she caused everyone involved, especially her beau Robert Pattinson. The real question, though, is whether or not the couple will call it quits.

Even though Stewart and Pattinson are not married, the messiness of their separation may remind our readers in Colorado of the many concerns that come up during a divorce. The two became an item while working on the screen versions of Stephanie Meyer's "Twilight," which, for those who don't know, is about an adolescent girl who falls in love with a centuries-old vampire.

The off-screen romance seemed like a match made in heaven, but it appears that trouble was brewing between the high-profile couple as early as April 2012. In an interview with Italian Vogue, Pattinson hinted that the sun might be setting on his relationship with Stewart when he rhetorically asked the interviewer why people cheat.

Rupert Sanders may also be facing his own high-asset divorce. Sanders publically apologized to his wife of seven years, Liberty Ross, who played Kristen Stewart's mother in the movie "Snow White and the Huntsman." It is unknown whether Ross will forgive her husband, but if she does file for separation, things could get complicated quickly.

In addition to drawing up a custody agreement for their two children, the couple would need to divide the marital property and real estate assets. Rupert may be required to pay alimony and child support. Even if there were a prenuptial agreement in effect, many times those agreements contain infidelity clauses that nullify some or all of the provisions contained within. Both parties would still need knowledgeable lawyers that have experience with complex asset division cases to help them sort things out.

As for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, their separation would be a lot less complicated, at least in terms of the law. Any contractual agreements they had would have to be settled in civil court since they never wed, and attorneys with experience handling civil union dissolutions and divorces may need to be employed.
